Okay y’all, I’m doing it. I’m writing a book about NixOS (@nixos_org) heavily focused on onboarding, usability, and practical examples. Suggestions and requests welcome!

Channels! Which channel will I use when using nix-env -i as a user, VS systempackages in configuration.nix e.g. - still confuses me and I use NixOS every day.

How to mix package vers in nixos (eg kernel modules). Easy in user envs, but how to do it in configuration.nix?

But at least take my money 😅 I am exploring Nix as infrastructure for a legacy app BTW. I made it to work with Docker but it added too much complexity

Oh, I'll take your money!!! :) Honestly, I feel like Nix* has the potential to be *the* alternative to the containerization paradigm, which I think is GREAT for lots of things but not everything.

Hey, I'm a fan of your 7dbs book. I just bounced off the Nix manual and wrote up my notes; maybe this will be useful on where newbies get stuck: https://push.cx/2018/nixos

I was really confused that most of thing are just a "record" and how it all strings together then I finally know about all-packages. A programmer's perspective intro will definitely help with that. Customizing packages is pretty confusing for a newbie too.

Yup. I'm envisioning three sections: (1) basics, (2) cookbook for common tasks, (3) a handful of complex use cases.

Personally, I would love to hear about Apparmor configuration. The process just appeared to be non-trivial and there is nothing on the web that covers it. Although it's probably not a good fit for the book, but it's my five cent.
