There seems to be a widespread misconception that zk-SNARKs require a trusted setup (e.g. to generate a common reference string) and zk-STARKs do not. This is _not_ true. You should check out Halo from Zcash as an example that eliminates the trusted setup. zcash.github.io/halo2/

Was wondering the same question. Can I store just one archive of the chain, but run multiple instances of zcashd with it ?
Or, can I run multiple lightwalletd instances on one zcashd or zebrad instance?

Disgusting complicity on the part of the New York Times. He has ruined countless people's lives by theft and fraud, and NYT is now helping him to delay or evade justice by whitewashing him in their prestigious, influential newspaper. I doubt this is just a mistake on their part.
