yes. The threshold at which something is deemed an emergency/suddenly "worthy" of openness is impeding so much research into conditions that cause people ongoing, terrible pain (as just one example).

As I've said before many times, "Every single time we decide to mandate immediate OA & to accelerate publishing due a disease/health crisis, we must pause and ask ourselves how we do not mandate it for all research." It's just heartbreaking and maddening to keep repeating this.

2015: Immediate open access is critical for Ebola. 2016: For Zika 2019: For opioids 2020: for ... 2025: Let's stop this nonsense. It's critical for for HIV, cancer, malaria, and literally ALL RESEARCH.

Current discussions around coronavirus preprints highlight the strength of preprints rather than a weakness. It’s thanks to the open-access nature of preprints that other scientists are able to properly evaluate the claims right away, do their own analyses, and suggest caution.

And the good news is that ALL of our science is open, ALL of the time, accelerating progress on ALL diseases and not only the ones that grab the headlines.

From : "When the story of the coronavirus (2019-nCOV) is finally written, it might well become a template for the utopian dream of — where research data is shared freely, unrestrained by competition, paywalls and patents."

My take is similar wrt preprints and definitely less gracious wrt peer-reviewed pubs.

This may be the fastest ever retraction due to mass peer-review of a manuscript in the history of publishing. Never happens with the most forged articles in main-stream publishing. This is only a testimony to how vital posting pre-prints became!
