imo the weirdest thing abt the cat person discourse is that people are calling it a "piece" or an "article" (???) when it is most definitely a regular degular short story which makes me find the whole phenom interesting in terms of how we think about form & contemporary fiction

fiction is distinguished from nonfiction for a reason, & we continuously frame it as such. we use fiction to say certain things about the world, and it allows for devices like unreliable narration, which don't fly in a personal essay. the collapse of that is... distressing!

i think many ppl are unused to reading contemporary fiction that isn't "booky" / that reads like a narrative essay, but the trouble with conflating the two is that our expectations for fiction are VERY DIFFERENT from that of essays.

when you treat a short story like a personal essay, you end up in a weird place where you ask for morality from characters, rather than considering the architecture of the story, its devices, and its world. instead of thinking critically about it, you're asking it for lessons.

i think this directly stems from the (very bad) IS X FEMINIST?!?!? school of criticism, which is a terrible way to read text. anyway, i have no takeaway here except to suggest that we all become better, more critical readers and also CAT PERSON IS A SHORT STORY NOT AN ARTICLE

wait one last thing: when you write and publish in a specific form, you are entering into a contract with the reader. choosing to write fiction means we as readers agree to read the text as fiction. this distinction is crucial to how we understand text! we ought to consider it!

conflation of fiction with reality is often a problem readers have w/ realist fiction, but calling it an article or nonfiction is a whole other (strange) thing. i am fascinated.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but when teaching undergrad my students tend to completely interchange "story" "essay" and "article" no matter what we're reading

“Piece” isnt so bad. Art, paintings, sculpture, etc are referred to as “pieces” all the time.

Poor readership when folks try to act like a work of fiction is nonfiction. So suffocating as a writer

oh - I genuinely didn't know it was fiction but it read very weirdly to me and i honestly related to it a lot, I think most women (?) have had something similar. Makes sense tho

And now i see the big fat fiction section header at the top....! I read it on my phone before, my eye just wasn't drawn to it, but I definitely recognised something was 'off'. You're absolutely right tho
