It doesn't matter so much whether that stake is economic or not -- in fact I think non-economic stake (e.g., reputation) can be a much bigger motivator.

I never felt part of a "community" at the hedge fund I worked for since I had no real stake, and no matter how much noise Uber makes about "community," I don't buy it. You exist to serve wealthy investors. Leave me alone. It's marketing mumbo jumbo.

For this reason I think the projects that "win" e.g. Bitcoin and Ethereum are the ones that understand this, implicitly or explicitly, and empower the broadest segment of the population to take ownership and stewardship over the code/protocol/network. Ergo community. Qed.
