My current works in progress: - be kinder - be more patient - be more equanimous - listen more - less ego - less twitter, more long form - focus - do less, better - minimize It's been a stressful week. Let's all be nice to each other and remember why we're here, kay? ♥️

Interesting example of complex systems and how the Precautionary Principle led to more suffering. (Less nuclear power --> increased electricity prices --> less heat --> more death from cold.) h/t

Is there a name for the rule that, whatever a technology can be used to do, good or bad, someone somewhere will build? I feel like I read this in Team Human but I can't find it again :(

Is it truly possible for software to upgrade itself? Even operating systems seem capable of this in practice these days. Yet Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems seem to suggest that no formal system can completely encode rules to upgrade the system. 🤔

Banks (and for profit cos in general) saying they want to "bank the unbanked" is no different than China saying it wants to "civilize and modernize" Tibet or Xinjiang, or any other form of colonialism for that matter. Many "unbanked" are differently banked and don't trust banks.

So much of the casual abuse of personal data and collection of it is just habits formed in an earlier, more naive time. No day like the present to revisit your assumptions and ask the hard questions. ✌️

They care a lot about small government and privacy, obviously. But these schools of thought were seminal in the creation of Bitcoin and Ethereum and isn't part of the appeal of such systems a level playing field and unbiasable, neutral, known rulesets?

I get that most libertarians (other than left/socialist libertarians) don't exactly believe in equality of outcome, but do they, especially the cypherpunk/crypto-anarchist variety, have a stance on equality of opportunity, or equality before the law?

Here's why in Customer Development, you only ask users about themselves and not about others, in one chart:

Can someone please, please, *please* write a Slack Light app already? This is ridiculous. It barely runs even on a brand new Macbook Pro. 🤦‍♂️ Sometimes I think our entire application stack is ... wrong.

Is there a name for the phenomenon where the incumbent system is totally broken, yet is not replaced by a better, redesigned system simply because the switching costs are too high/momentum is too great? Path dependency? Institutional momentum? There must be a better name!

A common argument is that the left is losing because the far right is tweeting. But this article suggests the opposite. Namely, what if the left is losing because the *far left* is tweeting…and this is driving candidates to win the Twitter primary at the expense of the general?
