The Guangzhou subway was surprisingly well used today, even as the streets stayed mostly empty. There’s a new mandatory mask rule in effect. Some people improvised, with impressive results.

Time to get back onto Twitter. I’m about to arrive in Wuhan to see how the city is coping under the lockdown and the menace of the coronavirus. Also follow live updates at the Times.

The ban is little known outside the industry. In the past, China has introduced about 6000 American books per year. At such a critical moment in the relationship between the U.S. and China a cut in the flow of ideas between the two countries is a major loss.

An unexpected victim of the trade war: books. Hundreds of books written by Americans didn’t show up in China’s bookstores as scheduled. Editors noticed the CIP application of almost all American books got delayed since this summer. With

China’s police are hard at work building the largest domestic surveillance network the world has seen. The key is not so much tech as a lack of checks on police power. Hugely invasive networks of scanners and cameras now blanket most Chinese cities.

I just got back to Hong Kong from a trip to Silicon Valley, where it was clear that a red scare has washed over SF. Some takeaways:

Lmfao. Someone did not vet the Nets’ promo video. They just had players on the big screen answer the question what was the famous dictum of Bruce Lee. The answer, also the favorite saying of Hong Kong protesters: be water! Fans didn’t realize that though. China social media will.

The latest NBA in China controversy is online anger after a Lakers player (possibly rookie Talen Horton-Tucker) signed a miniature Chinese flag. Confirmed with a security guard at the Lakers' corner who saw it. He said he scolded two fans with the flag and wanted to kick them out

Workers are ripping off a big NBA ad of tomorrow's Lakers VS Nets game in Shanghai. Still unclear if they can play. When asked why it's taken down, a worker said "no idea, orders from above."

Two things protesters often bring up about the fear of mainland: facial recognition and social credit system(which is exaggerated, e.g. you can't fly if you spit in the street.) Others: Xinjiang, controlled media, WeChat censorship. Pretty aware of the risks than many mainlanders

The legal difference between Face/Touch ID and PIN? PIN is "knowledge" and therefore you don't have to tell the police that as part of your right to remain silent. Face and finger print are not considered "knowledge" and therefore not part of your right to remain silent.

Plainclothes police stalked Colin Cheung as he went to lunch. When he unlocked his phone they sprang on him to pry it away. Later they’d pin down his head to trigger the phone’s facial-recognition unlock. His crime? Allegedly creating a Telegram channel.
