Here’s what you’ll need to prepare if you want to pitch yr academic book project to a publisher this year: 1. A working title for the book. Don’t worry, you can change it later. 2. A project description or overview. Summarize your main argument, how you prove it, why it matters

  2. I’d heard from other Jeopardy contestants that some partners can be jealous and unsupportive after one goes on the show My spouse, who is the best, texted me this:

A still of Steve Carell from Anchorman saying I Love Lamp, but lamp is crossed out and replaced with Champ

  8. Media studies folks — you need to preorder this book, especially if you’re interested in the material conditions of TV & film consumption! I loved working on it with bc it took me back to my TV studies roots 📺 💖

  9. Click through that link to see one of my most awkward photos of all time. Bc of social distancing we couldn’t stand too close to the host (I can’t blame social distancing for not knowing what to do with my hands though)

  14. And those books you’re seeing everywhere? Their authors are EVERYWHERE, putting a ton of labor into promotion (which may or may not be financially remunerated). If that’s not where you want to put your efforts as a scholar, that’s ok

  15. I think that scholars see prominent examples of books their colleagues are writing that are crossing over and mistakenly think that’s the kind of book they have to write. It’s just that these examples are super visible (by definition!), not that they’re the norm

  16. And, again, it’s ok if you’re mostly writing for academics. Find a press that’s looking for that & just be clear about who your book is for

  17. If you think u want to write a trade or crossover book (I.e. one that yr press will try to sell to nonacademic readers), make sure yr reading lots of books like that. Immerse yourself in their pitch & scope. You’ll gain a new perspective on what “accessible” & “interesting” mean

  18. Not every scholarly book is destined to be a trade/crossover book. Not every press is expecting that. Don’t feel like you have to sell that in your proposal if it’s not your vision for your book (and it’s not realistic)

  20. I’m doing a scholarly book publishing Q&A via Zoom on Friday, just for alums of the Book Proposal Accelerator. If you’ve done the Accelerator at any point in the past, you should have received an email with details. (Let me know if you didn’t!)
