Great story of playing the long game w/recruiting: - founder gave an offer to an engineer 1 year ago - engineer decided to go join a FAANG co instead - founder began doing bi-monthly lunches w/engineer - engineer regretted joining FAANG co. Joining founder's startup this week! :)

Actually, kind of! In early stages, when you have <10 employees, if this approach helps you get 1-3 more great people, it's a big win. In later stages, when you have <10 execs, if this approach helps you get 1-3 more great execs, it's a big win.

No counter offer from the FAANG company?

The regret was based on not liking the FAANG job, so a counter wouldn't have addressed that.

Ha, you haven’t see some of these retention packages :), economics overpower the most passionate employees... $GOOG was the most ruthless at this.

Been recruiting a doctor for two years. Her youngest daughter is finally in her last semester of HS and she's joining the team in September.

No’s in recruiting are best interpreted as “not now”. Have seen this many times.

Often companies, including start ups, make the mistake that recruiting happens when they need it or it a finite time. Always be recruiting and be patient and the talent will notice.

We had someone who joined about a month ago - We started the initial relationship with the person over a year ago. When someone tells me they are not interested or go somewhere else I set a reminder to reach back every few months :)
