Haven't you left out the time factor? My wife published a paper as a postdoc which over time has over 1000 citations. Her advisor was in his mid-thirties. It took time for the work to be appreciated. My wife BTW is person of color.

Exactly. I'm saying that time is a factor that should be taken into account (and the authors of the preprint did not properly account for it). It's actually very complicated to properly account for, because with time there are also more researchers and therefore more citations.

There is a point that you don't make, about age: signers of letter A are more likely to be writing diversity statements; signers of letter C are more likely to be reading them. This difference of perspective, and why younger people value them, is worth discussing

The authors of the third letter specifically solicited invitations from select full professors at highly ranked institutions. That would also seem to have the potential to significantly skew the results.
