Could be 12 for 2 tris for 6 sides of a cube? Maybe it has a very slight amount of depth to it to prevent clipping beneath a surface.
Thinking more about it, this actually a good idea. By giving it depth to prevent clipping and raising it up slightly, I think you skip a bit of math computation that would be used to add height based on the normal of the surface for the same goal of preventing clipping.
It's probably rigged and they animated some twisting and turning on it to make it more lively than just static sprite would be :)
