Like Europe became more hedonistic after the Black Death. Suffering doesn't make us inherently more altruistic; if anything it can makes survivors more desperate to make up for lost time, or chase their joy while they have it.

It will never not be weird how some people don't can't internalize that different people will react to events in sometimes wildly different ways.
