YouTube tried to punish Crowder by demonetizing his channel. It didn't do much. Crowder has mocked the situation, and even gloated over the new business the controversy has sent his way. I want to specify, too: Demonetization as a day-to-day thing, is still a major issue within the YouTube community. That's different than YouTube removing someone from the Partner Program as a means of self defense and an attempt to send a message.
For these major creators, it means nothing because they have outside revenues to make money. What hurt them is when their videos don't get recommendations. That can kill a channel.
Especially companies like Vox
It wasn’t YouTube who tried to punish Crowder, it was NBC/Vox via Maza and his fellow Verge retweeters who couldn’t handle the “Vox rebuttal” videos in a creative fashion. Had to go turn fascist and tattletale instead... and all you did was make him stronger. Pretty embarrassing.

Crowder is an entertainer. His content is edgy but it is NOT hate speech As a conservative, they’re very few political comedy/satire shows that are available. Deplatforming is not the answer. If YT/Twitter have rules against hate speech - then specify so that creators can abide

YouTube does have those rules. Laughably, it has a "don't be rude about people" policy too. "Content that makes hurtful and negative personal comments/videos about another person."
I think they've rewritten that now, to include the "but if the primary purpose is to attack a protected group, the content crosses the line," caveat, which is on the opening page summaries, but not in the actual policy.
Enforcement the right way takes more than that kind of policy or it's not just words, it's either positive dishonesty or incompetence or both. Running a business is complicated. But the priorities and conflicts and dynamic should be something they can at least describe.
I signed into a completely new gmail account, went to YouTube and the very first thing that was promoted to me at the top of the page was a Crowder video.
When I read "not allowed" in the YouTube rules it would seem to mean that they will remove his videos and his account, not just demonetize. This sends the message that the platform can be used to spread hate as long as YouTube does not have to provide ad revenue.
We should outlaw all free speech unless it comes from Ivy League grads with popular opinions! What the Founders envisioned :)
As has to be repeated over and over since people don’t seem to actually understand how the world works - private companies have nothing to do with free speech. Nothing whatsoever.
Private extralegal censorship matters when only five media companies and two online content clearing houses remain alive with any market share. This isn't 1799 with three newspapers per town as only media.
Just because you think something should be some way, doesn’t change the constitution. And are you actually arguing that people have LESS access to different media nowadays? For real?
Technically we have access to more types of media. Google (YouTube) and Facebook are market juggernauts. Centrists whine to shut down debate via juggernaut censorship. An adaptable bunch.
And be honest... If controversial politics stars do win w folks migrating to small platforms/private sites, y'all will come after them still. Alt-Right is popular bc grown-ups at WaPo & CNN & established parties offer only a bleak future and condescension. Up your own game.
