[unorganized thoughts] jan 19 - feb 1 may be one of the most loosely-controlled period chinese internet has ever seen and will ever see in in the next couple years (or till the next big public crisis).

re censorship: according to bj-based artist jian cui, caxin/caijing and even state media the paper face heightened pressure to control information. large-scale censorship (removal of news reports & escalation of GFW) would begin on feb 2.pic.twitter.com/CRBeFAoaLN

my own observation (not systematic) seems to confirm this. not only there are significantly less critical voices on weibo/wechat, previously circulated reports have been removed. screenshot->an article on rumours as social resistance by comm scholar hu yong. censored within 24hrspic.twitter.com/mWIU6iisNi

other evidence supports that HEAVY info control is here. screenshots show some previously widely discussed topics blocked on weibo search including the search phrase 'wuhan mayor admits delays in information disclosure.'pic.twitter.com/6xB6UALgay

worst still, some official orgs/state media might have deleted (needs to confirm if its deleted or censored) their original posts admitting wrongdoings. screenshot shows the original post by hubei provincial redcross's explanation on why there's mismatch in its invoicepic.twitter.com/cfn9T5W29n

re propaganda: imo censorship alone isn't that effective unless its paired with propaganda. it seems to me that china's info control regime is honing in on both. i predict we'd see much more propaganda/censorship since feb.

scattered pieces of evidence of proactive propaganda: posts stigmatizing public intellectuals & questioning validity of censorship criticism have emerged visibly on weibo.pic.twitter.com/FgUUAkOaS8

i cant verity the last pic in previous post, which claims the delay of caixin's print version was indeed a 'technical issue.' but attacking govt criticism and sowing doubt only takes that tiny bit of effort.

besides (1) focusing on 'positive energy,' (2) silencing & attacking govt critics, the prpg apparatus is also (3) resorting to nationalism. mofa earlier called out US's temp ban on travellers whod been to china, but it reads like the policy is targeting only chn citizens.pic.twitter.com/tCH7HiapbI

re where this goes: again im pessimistic. but i want to end w some 'positive energy.' the reasons why we see an extremely nationalistic online environment on chinese internet is very likely a manipulated result.

when mofa shamed countries' travel ban as 'taking advantage of china,' most online comments (1) criticized mofa for saying so, citing its natural other countries wanted to protect their own citizens, and ...pic.twitter.com/kiit6Iv35N

(2) directed criticism back at govts for inaction & lack of transparency in the first place. we will continue to see a stifled civil society, an unusually nationalistic online envir. but also need to keep in mind there are still lots of critical thinking minds [end]
