When I started at my institution on the tenure track, a colleague told me not to use Dr b/c it’s “off putting” to students, but my very senior male colleague could “get away with it because he has gravitas”. I had no words.

I hope U promptly introduced yourself as doctor! I would ensure I did so after such a comment. You didn't work hard for years not to be honoured with such a title. Kinghts get to be called Sir and so you must be DOCTOR!
