For purposes of balance — but I’ve never worked anywhere where it’s worked like this, I think (many institutions ask for percentages of time spent on tasks, which must add up to 100 per cent, logged as 37 hours, regardless of your actual working week) https://twitter.com/profchalmers/status/1224240326786912257?s=21 …https://twitter.com/profchalmers/status/1224240326786912257 …

That’s not how the system works at my institution, and in my last job I remember my HoS being concerned about some of the total hours figures. I think it is true that TRAC is designed to record how our workload divides up rather than how much there is, though.

Huh, it has been at mine — at York it was hours based but we couldn’t record ‘overtime’ from what I remember; at Southampton we can only record the percentages of our time spent on different aspects of the job and the percentages add up to 100 eg 37 hrs

I remember when I tried to indicate I'd done some work on a weekend and it didn't accept that an academic could possibly work on a Saturday.

If I really think about these things they make me so mad. I write in the meaningless % s to stop getting the emails. They never bother to consider correcting the system or seem to consider the results at all. It is a charade we are all performing, for what?

My favourite was having to fill in time sheets which defined exactly how you worked your 37.5 hours a week. You couldn't for example claim to have worked a bank holiday. Simultaneously, Cambridge academics are contractually obliged to work bank holidays during teaching term.

I just don’t understand why organizations still do this. We don’t track any of this and as a result I spend >90% of my time doing the thing I’m employed to do. I’m happy, company is happy. Everyone wins.

First time I ever filled in TRAC, management sent it back asking me to change the figures because I had allocated 'too much' to admin and it wouldn't do for HESA. Tells you all you need to know. (It wasn't in my current job, btw.)

Currently trying to work on a politics of refusal around this, on the grounds that it's unethical to misrepresent our work and the system makes it impossible to represent honestly.https://twitter.com/MBarany/status/1220660134126419969?s=19 …

May I humbly suggest: There could be a conflict with a clause in your contract that you can highlight. + GDPR requires orgs to hold accurate and true data about individuals so a referral to ICO for inaccuracy and therefore possible fine down the line might be a leverage point.
