  1. Prikvačeni tweet

I wrote something about history, and Brexit, and British identity: imperial nostalgia, post-colonial melancholia, the myth of the Blitz and the stories we tell about the past:

  10. That tweet is literally illustrated with a picture of the Battle of the Boyne. A famously settled, non-contested historical event.

  12. the cupboard example is apposite because *sometimes* a conversation does need to be private and that's fine, but often, my response to a perfectly innocent DM is: dude why are we in this cupboard

  13. if being DMed in response to a tweet is like a man pulling you into a cupboard to have a conversation with you, being emailed at work in response to a tweet is, well, like a man turning up at my workplace and trying to talk to me about one of my tweets

  14. this is extremely tedious but: if you are a man and you want to respond to one of my tweets then please do it on twitter and not by looking up my work email 🙃

  15. For purposes of balance — but I’ve never worked anywhere where it’s worked like this, I think (many institutions ask for percentages of time spent on tasks, which must add up to 100 per cent, logged as 37 hours, regardless of your actual working week)

  16. The fact that U.K. academia has a sector-wide workload tool, TRAC, which physically cannot record workloads over 37 hours a week, is really a good symbol of U.K. academia in general.

  18. British politics twitter has spent all day laughing at Dominic Cummings having spies all over Whitehall to stop leaks; meanwhile, American politics twitter overheard John Kerry explaining his top secret plot in a hotel lobby
