      you might very well be right, but, if so, doesn't that mean papers should stop writing about their positive possible impacts too? if what you argue is correct, it seems just as speculative, and just as dangerous…

      I'm ok with removing design implications... :) I think it's necessary to motivate a problem (in most CS work), but that can be done independently of crazy speculation. But like I said, it's rare that people gatekeep on the *content* of design implication sections.

      Or... *if* you include positive design implications, *then* you have to include negative ones, too. But more generally, I can't help but feel that arguments like Eytan's will be read as letting researchers off the hook.

      I guess this is the part I don't get. So authors only *maybe* get the positive/negatives of their work? And we need to check? If this is true, why should we trust them when they take their author hat off and put on the reviewer hat? 1/2

      I wish we were chatting about this... maybe some of the ideas you mention would be even better at meeting the FCA proposal. goals. But if you exempt research papers from taking this on, I still worry that this will let researchers off the hook and ghetto-ize Impacts discussion.

          Yup! Stay tuned :) As Eytan knows, I have lots of thoughts/ideas re his post (as a good pal, he graciously shared his post ahead of time). However, I’ll save them for that venue! For now, glad to have excitement around actually doing something to meet all our shared goals!
