Some of us in computing ed are starting to advocate around future conferences having a standard virtual participation option, increasing inclusion to attendees who can’t travel for any reason. Comment on the draft letter! Signatures will come later, advocacy after that.https://twitter.com/ShriramKMurthi/status/1367899679342682112 …

Should(n't) SIGCSE —and other SIGs— use this year's experiences to figure out how to make virtual participation a standard option for conferences? This letter is open for comment. [No sigs for now, until the letter finalizes.] CC @amyjko @guzdial https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jrYsQubL1etXo7abVPN_zjSm854YgSDOkUalkZ5_sMo/edit …

Hybrid by default needs to be at the core of change.

OK, sure, but the devil is in the details. I'll look forward to you figuring out how to get the details right at #CHI2021!

#CHI2021 is fully virtual. I have an article on hybrid with @midget_mg that I hope sees the light of day soon. Our vCAG for ‘21 spent a long time on hybrid. Even now we are exploring what hybrid means for the future of education here. Key: use of digital to modulate physical exp.

@cfiesler and I are charged with making CSCW 2023 a hybrid event. About as far as I've gotten is that virtual shouldn't try to emulate the in-person experience. Instead think "Beyond Being There" https://doi.org/10.1145/142750.142769 …. BOF discussions, meet the author, mentoring, ... ?

Yeah my comment would be that the letter is unnecessary because that’s all the steering committees and SIGs have been thinking about for 12M now.

The letter is really for SIGCSE, which hasn’t really had robust conversations about hybrid yet, though the various conference organizers have. This is largely because many SIGCSE venues still plan only 12-18 months out, unlike some SIGs that are 2-3 years out.
