      Say what you like about whether I have a thin skin, but if I'd been called out like that by a famous scholar in the field in the first year of my PhD, there's a good chance I would have spent time re-considering whether academia was right for me.

      There are lots of other great ways for people to respond to papers they disagree with, e.g., writing a blog post refuting some of the arguments or even maybe writing another paper in response.
