Someone posted to #cscw2020 that when we are able to go back to in-person events, we don't want to lose the inclusivity benefits of remote participation. I agree, but don't know how to do this. Specifically, we simply cannot replicate the in person experience remotely.

I wonder where you'd even begin to unpack this. It also seems to point to an implicit (societal? cultural?) bias of preference for in-person work inside of a conference so often devoted to distributed cooperation.

I’ve encountered this in the courses I teach. I have sometimes had a mix of online and f2f in the same course and the only way I have found myself able to design a decent experience is by trying to think of them as completely different pedagogic design problems.

It’s too resource intensive and trade offs have to be identified and made with careful consideration.

We should embrace the best of remote and the best of co-location, rather than trying to bend one into the other. Co-location should be about socialization. Remote about content and broadening reach. Here is a thread with some insights from other people:https://twitter.com/andresmh/status/1318206145773883393 …

The main goal should be to replicate the equalitarian structure that Zoom and the breakout rooms provide. For example... in this conference occurs in a hotel, probably most people would chat with others who they already know or from the same institutions.

I really appreciated the opportunity to talk with professors, researchers, and other students without the awkwardness of interrupting. How could in-person conferences promote new connections and conversations? Maybe by promoting mentors, speed dating events, or by design space.
