Someone posted to #cscw2020 that when we are able to go back to in-person events, we don't want to lose the inclusivity benefits of remote participation. I agree, but don't know how to do this. Specifically, we simply cannot replicate the in person experience remotely.

As far as I can tell, this absolutely means that the remote experience will be a second-class experience compared to in-person. I am observing what people are doing now and thinking about ways we can create a great hybrid experience, but...

I certainly don't think I'm smart enough to figure out how to avoid "remote participation is second class".

FWIW, I don't exactly care about replicating the in person experience remotely. For me, it's often a choice of in person or NO experience and I often can't make it in person for one reason or another. Having a virtual option, even if it's different, would be so welcome!

Agreed! I personally might often *prefer* a virtual experience, even if totally second class.

Today’s mood: perhaps we could shift to a model of alternating online & on-site every other year, optimize both for what they enable & cherish that (even) more than we’ve done until now.

There’s a reason why coach seats exist. Still get you to the destination. ;-) Joking aside, I totally agree with your point here. Maybe it’s just managing expectations for hybrid experiences.

FWIW, if I have learned anything as a #covidprof, it is not about making the formats equivalent, it is about making each the best at what they are. So in-person != remote, but rather make remote as awesome as it can be (and even better than in-person for some things).

I would counter that 5:30am start times for a virtual event aren't super inclusive for those with sleep issues, small children, etc. ...

I'm curious how the conference schedule (start/end times each day) was chosen. I'm not critiquing, I'm just really wondering what goes into those choices.
