I'd prefer slightly longer talks next year. These feel more like ads for the paper than a presentation of the paper. #cscw2020

My advisor once told me to think of the talk as an ad for the paper. :)

So did mine (how cute is that?), but I agree with your advisor that I like the longer presentations better for some types of papers; I think short talks are just fine for some contribution types.

Indeed. Some need more of an infomercial. I think I like somewhere around the 10-minute range personally.

"I'd like to hear a longer presentation of this paper I could go read" said no one ever. That's the joking version, but honestly, I prefer as short as possible. I really believe that details can only be absorbed through the paper, and the talk should be a teaser for the paper.

I just did say that, Loren? :) Do you remember when CHI sessions were 30 minutes per paper, 20 minutes for the talk plus 10 for questions? I'm not advocating for that, but 5 min is too short. Talks at CSCW 2013 were 12 min + 5 min for questions, which was perfect :)

(a) I got lost in the thread, so I'm not sure what you were referring to. I think I was just trying to emphasize a point in an exaggerated way. I apologize if I said exactly what you said. (b) I do remember...

and as I said, I still prefer shorter. I'm well aware it could be just my short attention span and low threshold of boredom.
