Loren - it does get better. To gauge my taste - I thought Picard was well done and the last episode of season 1 of Picard was in the top 5 of all star trek genre episodes.

I haven't seen Picard... can't bear to pay for CBS All Access.

yes, and no. my first reaction was the same about Sisko, yet i think somehow over the episodes he is consistently that … it becomes part of his character. hahaha. also, i know nothing about acting, maybe he's actually great ;)

Yeah, DS9 is maybe more loved than TNG by some circles. It does have a certain flavor though. Like any Trek show, it takes a season or 2 to really get going.

Yes, though my memory is a bit dated. I think it's one of those shows that you have to slog through the first season or two before it becomes interesting. But also it's still Star Trek so keep your expectations calibrated. :)

We've been re/watching it for pandemic entertainment. Some of the acting and dialog is not great (especially early on), but it all sort of gels, and my overall reaction is that DS9 is good in all sorts of ways that my younger self didn't appreciate when it first aired.

I think we'll try... looking forward to the "good in [other] sorts of ways"! Would it be feasible to skip the first season?

You need to have a viewing guide. It gets better quite quickly. It hits its stride at end of Season 1, and you don't need to watch many S1 episodes for the continuity.https://medium.com/maxistentialism-blog/star-trek-deep-space-nine-in-82-5-hours-10acde591fd2 …

Yeah, it gets way better IMO. Sisko figures out that the TV isn't the stage, the writers figure out who the characters should be, etc. DS9 is one of my favorite shows of all time.
-
Things I especially like about DS9, that make it worth the watch IMO: 1. The crew has to deal with the consequences of their decisions. 2. It takes apart the Trek universe and ask if the Federation sticks to its glorious principles when faced with a truly existential threat.
