Jesus Christ, it's not the position, it's the word used as a slogan. The position is good! We're not arguing about the substance, we're arguing about the utility of"defund the police" as marketing slogan.

But, i think many would argue other slogans wouldn’t properly convey the full extent of the sentament … replace the police, maybe?

I think we're disagreeing about the job the slogan is meant to do. I think that if it misrepresents the content and alienates potential supporters, it isn't a good slogan.

Oh, yeah, i mean i agree, but this slogan wasn’t created by a marketing firm. I think it’s my responsibility to try to understand where it came from and forgive its rough edges

yeah, it feels wrong to me to try to edit or revise the work of Black organizers. They get to articulate their own experiences and the solutions that they believe in, and it's my job to listen, learn, amplify, and support. If the original wording makes me uncomfortable...

... or requires me to do a little extra work to understand, I'm fine with that. I can help when I see others misunderstand or have questions.
