I have a few thoughts on this, because I feel like "well it would have been better if they picked a different term for this!" has been a common conversation I've had for any social justice terminology. For example, explaining that feminism isn't only about women's issues...
Jesus Christ, it's not the position, it's the word used as a slogan. The position is good! We're not arguing about the substance, we're arguing about the utility of"defund the police" as marketing slogan.

But, i think many would argue other slogans wouldn’t properly convey the full extent of the sentament … replace the police, maybe?

I think we're disagreeing about the job the slogan is meant to do. I think that if it misrepresents the content and alienates potential supporters, it isn't a good slogan.
