      Loren Terveen Retweeted Nick Young

I do not agree with the excerpted message (i.e., "you should be aiming for 50-60 hours a week of work..."). However, I think that the tone of the responses to the tweet have an implicit assumption that I don't agree with. Put another way, I think they are missing something.https://twitter.com/NickYoungPER/status/1267844679359442945 …

Alexa, show me an example of toxic academic culture. (Seriously, there's a pandemic and protests against systematic racism & unjustified killings of Black Americans. Productivity should not be at the top of the priorities list.) pic.twitter.com/4NRSNYDJ02

I would *never* ask or expect any student, including but not limited to, PhD students on fellowships or RAs, to work 50-60 hours a week. However, I think that having the opportunity to work on *research* should seem so desirable that -- at times -- students will *want to do so*.

I know I did. Again, note that I said "want to do so"... not that *I* expect them to do so. I also would say that, if students absolutely do not want to (sometimes) work long hours, that they don't love their research... that getting a PhD is going to be a tough slog....

... and it may not be the right path for them. That's fine! There's no problem with that.
