I hear you! Most non-native writers, myself included, are taught the "firstly", "secondly", etc. structure though. I *guess* "first" doesn't feel like an adverb without the "ly" at the end, when you are learning to write in English. :)
Writing hill to die on: "firstly", "secondly", etc. -- NO! It's just "first", "second", "third", etc.
