Take a look at the post -- see what the models are for other conferences, e.g., SOUPS and USENIX conferences, and see how their registration fees (and other funding mechanisms, and 'services offered') compare to CHI.

Well, I have done that, but it didn't really change the fact that I, a junior faculty member, couldn't afford to attend CHI 2019 using my $1250 conference budget. That said, I appreciate the thorough analysis presented in the post.

I agree that we may not find pushing these costs into conference budgets palatable. As a community, we need to decide how we balance these issues and express our values.
