I'm encountering so many young, queer members of the community that can't go to CHI in Hawaii this year for cost reasons. Treating these conferences like vacations for senior faculty and putting them in expensive locations hurts those just coming up, esp. the marginalized.

The rationale was what Jeff said: because we planned CHI 2021 to be in east Asia, and likely Japan, we thought of Hawaii literally as a “step towards” the next Asian CHI. We learned that Hawaii is pretty easily accessible from east Asia, particularly Japan... 2/

Everyone involved in deciding to locate CHI 2020 in Hawaii understood the pluses and minuses, and I can tell you *none of the decision makers* sees selecting a conference location as an opportunity for a “vacation for senior faculty".

I appreciate the additional context, Dr. Terveen - consider me corrected on that front, and my apologies for that unfair bit of hyperbole. I recognize that CHI has a ton of moving pieces/tradeoffs.

That is totally fine, and very gracious of you... By the way, thanks for the great review you wrote for one if the CHI submissions I handled! Much appreciated.
