I'm encountering so many young, queer members of the community that can't go to CHI in Hawaii this year for cost reasons. Treating these conferences like vacations for senior faculty and putting them in expensive locations hurts those just coming up, esp. the marginalized.
More context: I’m as much responsible as anyone for CHI 2020 being in Hawaii. I was SIGCHI President when the Executive Committee decided to locate CHI 2020 there. 1/
The rationale was what Jeff said: because we planned CHI 2021 to be in east Asia, and likely Japan, we thought of Hawaii literally as a “step towards” the next Asian CHI. We learned that Hawaii is pretty easily accessible from east Asia, particularly Japan... 2/
... and is a popular destination for many Asians, particularly Japanese. Like Jeff, I would not personally choose to have CHI in Hawaii, and am in fact dreading the travel time and cost. 3/
