Well I expect Dropbox themselves to do whatever they want with the data, but providing it to outside researchers does surprise me.

really? granted there are debates on whether it is 'good' to receive data vs create/research data. and the ethics thereof . I'm pretty sure i could generate a good number of researchers who would take almost any data from a reputable company, norms and their justification vary
