this is totally separate from the lighting project, right? 'Cause I can't help but wonder how they'd handle being stacked.

yeah i am definitely wondering that too... maybe you could subdivide surfaces + turn them into separate light nodes? getting good coverage in 3d requires a lot more rays so caching might be pretty heavy.

This is so cool! I've been wanting go get into real-time 3d generated backgrounds like this for a video wall. It's a little overwhelming though... Do you have any tips for getting started? I've thought about trying Three.js b/c it looks pretty noob friendly.

yeah three.js is really approachable as such things go! i had good luck with it. also depending on platform, possibly unity? steeper learning curve generally, but for some applications comparable.
