And given that even TSA and their huge budget is better at finding water than weapons, is there any data that this is efficacious? Let alone having the benefits outweigh these clear drawbacks.
No. Though I must admit that my kids don't seem to be stressed out about the metal detectors and other security measures at their school. This is such a hard problem to investigate, and I'm not quite sure the best way to go about it.
It’s a reminder of the dangers without adequate security and gun control laws imo.

Mass surveillance - whether in the name of security, safety, efficiency or convenience - does far more harm than good. Erosion of the private sphere by the state & its corporate ‘partners’ is not compatible with the notion of a free society.
