This is the methodology that @pressfreedom uses to compile data on journalist killings, including tracking those killed in reprisal for their work, and those killed when an assignment becomes dangerous--sometimes unexpectedly:https://cpj.org/data/methodology/ …

"Dangerous assignment" includes "deaths while covering a demonstration, riot, clashes between rival groups, mob situations;" but also "assignments which are not expected to entail physical risk but turn violent unexpectedly," according to the methodology.

According to
@pressfreedom, which collects global data on journalists killed on the job, the Capital Gazette shooting "is an unprecedented event in the United States.” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2018/jun/28/capital-gazette-shooting-annapolis-latest-live-news-updates-today-maryland?page=with:block-5b35a3f0e4b08b4490eacae8#block-5b35a3f0e4b08b4490eacae8 …pic.twitter.com/9Qqlt5LG9Y

I'm really confused by the designation of "dangerous assignment" for Adam and Alison. They were killed reporting on a local park. Methodological description seems to flatten a lot of nuance in what would ultimately be targeted vendetta killings/workplace shootings.pic.twitter.com/YoxzebLm2P
-
I think that becomes even clearer when you see that category includes William Biggart, who was killed on 9/11. I wonder if an additional category wouldn't be more useful here as we look to quantify these things in a useful way re: research on mass shootings, etc.

Dangerous assignment? Alison and Adam were murdered.
-
Yeah, it was a local tourist destination at 6am. Not even close.
-
I had the same reaction, but the methodology defines "dangerous assignment" as an assignment that turns dangerous unexpectedly whereas "murder" is a targeted reprisal.https://cpj.org/data/methodology/ …
-
He was targeting his old coworkers. Does it matter they weren't expecting it while on assignment?
-
I don't know. would argue (as someone does a few replies down) that there needs to be more nuance to the categories, perhaps adding a few.
-
oh true. including "unexpected death" in dangerous assignment without any context (to include accident vs homicide to say the lease) is woefully lacking in true definition
-
agreed.

Odd classifications in that chart. The "type of death" for Adam Ward and Alison Parker is listed as "dangerous assignment." They were murdered. The work assignment wasn't dangerous.

The description methodology is seriously flawed if it leads to the Virginia murders being classified as “dangerous assignment.” It also doesn’t include the two S.C. TV journalists killed when a tree fell on their vehicle while covering a storm a few weeks ago.

What about the two killed in SC last month?

So one incident in the last 10 years, and that was a workplace grievance. Journalism seems like a pretty safe occupation.
