As downtowns struggle to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the "tent cities" and "encampments" that have filled spaces once busy with office workers have become tangible symbols of the virus’s crushing effects.

Thank you, , for unpacking the oversimplifications in this book. Reducing complex problems to partisanship is a distraction from real conversations and actionable solutions.

We thoroughly starved the redundancy and agility out of our supply chains for 30+ years. and I argue that without a bold effort to address systemic challenges, the uncertainties will get worse.

During the 2020 lockdowns, environmentalist Michael Shellenberger decided to ‘do his own research’ on the causes of/solutions to homelessness. He wrote it up in a new book, ‘San Fransicko: How Progressives Are Ruining Cities.’ My review in a thread.

It’s as simple as my colleague says: “there is nothing wrong with Black people that ending racism can’t solve.” This worldview is not ruining cities - it can save them.

Shellenberger says that progressives “put others and themselves down for being white, male, and straight” (such as Shellenberger), “while elevating those in supposed victim categories to higher…status” (p. 143).

My own research with had found that low-income Black people are very disproportionately likely to live in such places compared to low-income white people, and that these places are associated with all kinds of worse outcomes for people.

He argues that poverty isn’t a driver of addiction because poverty is declining but addiction is getting worse. But and others have clearly demonstrated that *concentrated* poverty is getting worse, especially in California.

Shellenberger argues that failure to follow this sequence is the cause of poverty. But it’s a cherry-picked fact, because he leaves out additional research from et al finding that the sequence does not work as well for Black people.

What bothered me most about ‘San Fransicko’ was the fake veneer of scholarship. As one example he abuses the research of my colleagues Ron Haskins and on the ‘success sequence.’

Overall, the author reminded me of the inspiration for this Weekend Update joke about a guy calling 911 to report a statue of Jesus

The article doesn’t mention but the same is true there. Across the board relief will be required as we navigate to a new normal and we are talking billions, not millions. So these costs are something to be concerned about.

Flexibility for workers is a good thing. However, as points out, the speed of this evolution is causing businesses a lot of pain in the short term.

However the problem is not just capacity (both federal & state), but also priorities. People don't trust the government bc it's done things that have hurt their communities (torn them down for a highway; NAFTA, etc). States can and must do better.

I also agree that stagnant information technology has evolved beyond just a problem and into an active source of distrust in government. Let's unleash the power of . Also check out the work of my colleague on digital transformation.
