"The future of our state is not written in the stars. It is for us, the free men and women of Utah, to dictate our destiny. To anyone who believes that the next generation in Utah will be worse off than their parents, my message is simple: not now, not on our watch."

The picture below is hanging in the Utah Capitol House hallway, a recognition she was the first woman to be Speaker of the House. Becky gave it her all and loved her colleagues. They loved her back. Over time, I’m thinking we will all get to join her and her clan. I can’t wait.

Then we went to a bench at Bicentennial park with her name on it and walked the wetlands boardwalk there like we had many times when she was with us. Then a trip to Sodaliccious, a place Becky often went with Hannah and sometimes with the rest of us. 11/12

Emily is out of the country, but Steve, Hannah and I spent a rainy/snowy bit of time at Becky’s grave this afternoon. We remembered a wife and mom. And as Emily said at her funeral, she’s probably the Governor of a clan on the other side. 10/12

Becky said that I couldn’t survive without her. And as usual she was right. Remarrying Michelle however has filled that emptiness and need. So now it’s been 8 years. Time truly passes by like a dream. I miss Becky. 8/12

It was hard on each of us when she died as she was the epicenter of our universe. We all grieved. I grieved for my wife. The kids grieved for their mom. I see a lot of Becky in each of them. It came to me right after Becky died that I had another 30-40 years to go. 7/12

Always with too much to do and not enough time to do it all, we held it together. After she died, I discovered she had a deeper personal relationship with each of our three children, making sure they often had her attention in the midst of her Legislative duties. 6/12

We worked together to raise a family and balance the demands of life. Just today I saw a young mother who holds elected office doing that same dance of priorities and I reminisced about those times for us. 5/12

When we married in 1988, who knew what was in store for her. I certainly didn’t, but had a crush on her from the moment I saw her walking down an aisle at church. I thought, “there goes one hot mama”. 27 years later I felt exactly the same way. 4/12.

This morning as Steve and I walked through the rotunda, he mentioned that every time he walks through the Capitol, something reminds him of mom. I said that must be hard. He replied that it wasn’t because it helped him remember her. 3/12

She loved the House Chambers which she likened to other holy places. She loved the symbolism in the Capitol and gave tours that were full of information, a touch of reverence and respect for those who had the foresight to build it. 2/12

8 years ago today, Becky died at age 46 from CJD. She would be thrilled that the Legislative session began today. She loved everything about the Utah Legislature. The process of passing bills and approving appropriations were sources of energy and enthusiasm. 1/12
