I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how to make my study abroad less colonial and more collaborative with the people we encounter. I want us to go beyond mere educational tourism and become people who fight for social justice and end to structural violence.

I really believe that learning experiences abroad cannot focus on short term fixes or "making us grateful for what we have in the United States." If that's all students get out of my program, then I have failed.

I am also forever working on understanding my own role in colonial legacies and systems of oppression both in Latin America and in the United States. It is humbling, uncomfortable, and always necessary work.

I met a few American & European exchange students in Mex & felt sorry for them. Is difficult to like them when they perpetuate colonialists ideas & act like they're too good to be there. Made things more difficult for them tbh.Glad you're teaching them, it's for their own good

YES. It is exactly those attitudes and assumptions about Mexico and the global south generally that I am working on shifting. Thanks for your kind words.
