Terrific photo of from INAH's Waite-Scott Collection. The INAH database puts the date at circa 1908, but that's off by nearly 20 years. In the background is the mid-consolidation Temple of Warriors which was begun in 1926 and completed in 1928.

when editing, you can delete words 95% of the time. You don’t need em. Just delete your entire manuscript, turn off your laptop, walk outside & find a bog, let the peat reclaim you under its mossy blanket

"I know you from Twitter" - Embarrassing for everyone involved - Humiliating - Too online "Your reputation precedes you" - Cool and scary - Mysterious - Potentially ominous - Old-timey villian

While it is and this photo from the Museo Nacional has nary a Chac Mool in it (and they have many), I just love the atmosphere and the sculpture from Mexico's past. Great photo!

Thank you for allowing me to share my experiences around my birthday. It was a cathartic exercise! I would love to hear from other adoptees or NPEs about any issues you experience around that time of year...🙏🏻

Once sat in on a job talk where the candidate talked abt Ota Benga & Human Zoos in early 20cth . She argued that our modern equivalent is reality shows like Hoarders/600-lb-life etc. That's all I can think of every time I see the new Biggest Loser ads.

A friend of mine born in Guatemala and adopted by white parents told me once that your adopted child shouldn't be your first POC friend and I think about that a lot.

Here's a short story for independent scholars and those without library access: I emailed a very prominent scholar about a chapter in a book that is priced at over $200 just to RENT saying who I was, why I wanted the chapter, and asked if they'd be willing to share a PDF.

Since people are super worried about whether white Americans are even allowed to write about Mexico, here is a thread about white Americans and Brits who wrote amazing books about Mexico admired by Mexicans. So if you want to begin with white writers to learn about Mexico, read:
