I recently realized my dissertation on the civ-mil of special ops has already been published as a book. It's a 1985 release titled "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie." In light o this finding, I have reinterpreted my argument... "If you show SOCOM a terrorist"- a thread 1/n

My top tactic is conducting psyops on the tank crew by waiting until they exit the tank for a while, then I leave an apologetic note on the turret saying I accidentally scratched their tank but had to leave for an appointment. They go nuts checking for damage that isn’t there.

I have traveled to many cities. Did you know that you can use a banana peel to throw a tank's tracks? Chiquita and Jack Dorsey, please send help immediately.

I’m always both excited and terrified when movies like Dog come out. Belgian Malinois are *incredible* dogs and deserve the hype, but after movies like these, there are surges of folks adopting mals with no idea what they’re getting themselves into. 1/n

In sum, Russia has not been as aggressive in the info space as many predicted, but it doesn't mean they have failed. They have accomplished several key objectives domestically and internationally, and still have time to ramp up propaganda against 🇺🇦 to support their brutal war.

I think that as the war grinds on, Russia likely will escalate its info against yhe Ukranian population- not to win hearts and minds, but to convince them that fighting is futile and that they should just lay down arms to avoid total destruction. 15/

Seems surprising that 🇷🇺 completely abdicated the info space within Ukraine, but remember: 1) Much of 🇷🇺 Army itself didn't even know they were going to war, meaning no time and resources to build a narrative, 2) There is no way to "IO" your way out of such an egregious act. 14/

Finally, the ones tragically most affected by the conflict, the Ukranian population. First, it is hard to know exactly what info different groups of Ukranians receive because our info is so heavily filtered by language abilities, algorithms, the media, etc. 13/

What seems like a small minority of Putin sympathizers would likely seem much larger and more forceful if the US had a different president. These voices shouldn't be treated as inconsequential just because their preferred candidates are currently not in power. 12/

Although these audiences don't seem to be driving policy for now, this could change in the US after 2022 and even more dramatically after 2024 depending on just a handful of states and counties. 11/

Fourth, Western publics. Much of the same disinfo Putin uses to arm partners like 🇨🇳 is also designed for both useful idiots and autocratic sympathizers in the West. Fortunately for Putin, there is a sizable enough audience that he doesn't have to work very hard here. 10/

Biden's moves to publicly release intel about false pretexts completely undercut Putin and gave the West enough time that they weren't caught off guard and could coordinate their response. 9/

Third, Putin's false pretext for war has been a complete failure in the eyes of elite decisionmakers in the West. This was arguably Putin's biggest miscalculation. No amount of disinfo or propaganda would have found support amongst NATO and the EU, but... 8/

Putin's propaganda came up somewhat short here, causing 🇨🇳 to struggle a bit in finding ways to support 🇷🇺, blame the West, and keep their options open for potential future moves against Taiwan and in the SCS, but the propaganda has done just enough. 7/

Second, Putin's narrative doesn't have to be internationally accepted, it just needs to give partners like China enough wiggle room to turn things against the West and tacitly support Russia without boxing themselves in. Same goes for neutral states like India. 6/

Importantly, Russians don't have to believe domestic propaganda for it to be effective- it just has to create the impression that enough people believe it to prevent collective action. 5/
