What proportion of math papers (published in reputable journals, say) do you think are wrong, in the sense that the statement of a theorem, lemma, proposition, etc is actually false?
What proportion of math papers (published in reputable journals, say) do you think are wrong, in the sense that not every statement in the paper is true as written?

This depends on the line between true and truish. I’d say being generous to the author and excluding typographical errors (eg a word is left out rendering a sentence nonsensical) I’d guess 20%.
-
I meant this last poll to equate “truish” and “false.”

Why did you choose 90 as the cutoff?
-
IMO the number is obviously higher than 90%, at least in my experience — but maybe this depends on the subfields etc.

What is the difference between “false” and “not true as written”? Is the latter accounting for trivial errors like typos?
-
I’m distinguishing between a theorem statement being false (and being what the author meant, rather than just omitting some implicit and easily-guessable hypothesis), and cases where the author forgot about the empty set.

Daniel, this depends very much in the field, and even inside a field of the sub-field.
-
I’m sure it does!

I love these polls!

btw I took some time to understand the difference between 1 and 3, cost of not being native-speaker
