What's an Effective field theory (EFT), and why we care about it? 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 (yes, there's an index for this twitter thread): 1. Decoupling 2. Effective 3. Renormalization 4. References

  8. Not entirely serious, but it’s interesting that phil physics isn’t more popular given that it checks off all the boxes for people who unironically say they “love science/logic/truth/reality/facts and reason/etc.” Seems like the natural place to go if you’re a science lover

Here's a brief tour through recent philosophy of physics: (the first part of my post on realism is also on the blog, but it's not close to finished)

most of our concepts, like “tree” and “hate,” seem natural in comparison to concepts that pick out things like “half a tree and bottom 10% of a mountain” I think we should carve things up such that we can only speak to each other with bizarre categories like “quark anime”

This nicely diagnoses the twitter scientism I’ve been worried about (from Haack’s six signs of scientism):

You can even disagree with or be critical of the desire to mitigate climate change/poverty/racism. But there’s no need to misrepresent your opponents as adopting a perspectivism about maths where, say, a manifold has a different smoothness structure for white and black people.

Somehow they trade (second order, social) claims about the community of mathematicians and the institution of mathematics for (first order) claims about mathematical results. They’re not social epistemologists or mathematicians, but it’s horrid intellectual dishonesty.

hiring mathematicians to follow me around all day and teach me maths while I’m gaming, lifting, doing physics, eating, etc. lmk if you want a job that’s as underpaid as your adjunct work but less soul crushing

After being displaced from the center, we united celestial and terrestrial mechanics and now talk not only of spending billions to explore space, but to change it. Similarly our words and studies save lives, get people killed, constrain what people can do, etc. Speak carefully!

That science becomes intimately tied up with our social/economic/political/cultural lives isn’t new either. How humans viewed their position in nature changed along with the evolution of cosmology. We first took ourselves to be at the literal center, the heavens immutable.

Though scientists have been taught this lesson many times throughout history, the work we do has (sometimes severe) social and political. A preprint about the coronavirus is being used to facilitate extremely harmful conspiracies:

This is a great passage. I’ve yet to read any further, but I’m guessing Planck is setting up the reader for the violence that the discovery of quantum mechanics does to this picture of events being independent from measurements:

Oh no, Planck was an evil postmodern SJW (this is from his fun philosophy of physics book):
