I think I do this too, I just try a bunch of diff things and hope eventually it prompts someone feeling comfortable enough to share what they feel or some kind of relevent thing

it feels like the polite thing to do, its a way to show how you act I guess? and its an invitation to also act and join in its like how in movies where they get a kid to open up by pretending some random thing while ignoring the kid and kind of lure the kid into playing along
