      To me, talking of "the relentless rise of antidepressants" is like talking about "the relentless rise of fridges". The assumption is always that people were managing perfectly well before, when there's abundant evidence they weren't.

      I think you can make a decent argument that anti-depressants are not "over-prescribed" insofar as consumer demand for them is real & v high, but simultaneously, why is that demand so high?

      this is the real argument against Pinkerism. America got vastly richer since the 1950s & freer on many impt metrics - & everyone got way more miserable. What is the non ad-hoc explanation for this? popular miserabilism does not wholly rest on media & misperceptions
