It's a reality of enfranchised power. Politicians are a *class*. Intellectuals are a *class*. They will sooner talk to each other and express solidarity... whereas expressions of solidarity with another class / outgroup doom them. And yes proletarians are a class.

Extreme example: JS Mill and Carlyle were friends, though fraught at times, they had very different political opinions. JS Mill did accidentally burn the only copy of a manuscript of Carlyle's... Would love to know better examples.
