In the name of science I just attempted replication of the banana effect and failed, using a bunch of bananas and small 1" NaI detector.

With 10 minute measurement was hard to make out the K40 peak at all, let alone change due to bananas. No noticeable change in total counts

if they want to be able to detect small amount of well-insulated radioactive material then they probably have to deal with false positives
