my vague intuition is this doesn't end up being coherent and the tower ends at countersignaling

not clear to me ulam/VN is countersignaling. could be "no need to pay signal cost with full info"

ie if they know each other's friend level, they may as well do the amusing thing for amusement

which is different from being insulting to signal that one isn't someone who could in the long run

be mistakenfor a person who would say the insult & mean it. my guess is that's not new info to them

i think ppl sometimes say "countersignaling" to mean direction of signaling, sometimes also motive

and it'sconfusing because ppl signal in multiple dimensions in practice. instead of only back/forth

motive for not signaling is always a mix of not paying signaling cost + other things i guess
