been thinking about this for a few days, having done a few martial arts only through novice stage, having seen those youtube videos, and entirely agreeing. It struck me: we do still have soldiers in combat — is that not a real martial art?

We can compare military training to 3-gun, IPSC, IDPA, and I think the WHO WINS youtube videos are substantially the same. My impression is that the 'real' one is, in a way, boring. It's not the martial art that wins, mostly — it is logistics.

this is a really good way to put it - “logistics” is zooming out to include a lot more of reality than “fighting techniques”

another thing - re: rules of engagement/atrocity - doing atrocities is a strategic choice that can benefit or backfire, success/failure at a different level from “did your bomb hit the target”
