been thinking about this for a few days, having done a few martial arts only through novice stage, having seen those youtube videos, and entirely agreeing. It struck me: we do still have soldiers in combat — is that not a real martial art?

We can compare military training to 3-gun, IPSC, IDPA, and I think the WHO WINS youtube videos are substantially the same. My impression is that the 'real' one is, in a way, boring. It's not the martial art that wins, mostly — it is logistics.

I've just finished 'Meditations on Violence' by Rory Miller, which is all about not only how martial arts are completely different to real violence, but how experience in one type of violent situation doesn't carry over to another
