Can you think of a solid finding/result from social science (psychology, sociology, etc.) such that, without this piece of scientific knowledge, the coronavirus would have gone much worse than it is going?

I mean I guess normalcy bias but I sort of feel like that's common sense anyway

The work of Sigmund Freud influenced his nephew Edward Bernays, who created the public relations industry and taught governments and corporations how to control populations and public narratives. This could be used for good, but is used for power. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Bernays …

I am definitely learning from this - I think a lot of social science works this way (probably regular science too)pic.twitter.com/qjrTcO0Du7

Mathematical epidemiology is, uh, kind of a social science if you squint and if someone hits you on the head with a brick while you're squinting

Psychology: people generally like to move around. Probably we should stop that, a bit.

Sociology: seems like people talk different in different parts of the world maybe we should get our folks that talk like those other folks to talk to those other folks about this bad thing

I’m struggling to even invent a (plausible) one that isn’t just “a sociologist doing applied statistics.” I can almost imagine work on the limits of state legitimacy that prompts China to acknowledge the problem sooner than otherwise

nope. Maybe something in social epidemiology that could contribute but that'd just be something like percolation theory which might as well fall under mathematical modelling.

Without knowing how the measures being used to keep citizens in their homes in Hubei &c were derived...nope
